You’re working with a website design company, and you’ve been really pleased with the work they have done. But now it is your turn to add to this almost completed project by writing content. You said you would write the content because you thought, “Who would be better at describing my business than myself?” right?
Now you’re sitting at a blank page, trying to come up with ways to describe what you do every day. Yet nothing is working when you try and put it into words.
It’s more difficult to write about yourself than it seems. You know what you want to say, just not sure how to convey it. Before you spend any more time staring at a blank page, take these suggestions on how to start brainstorming and generating successful content.
Writing is done in a way that you have to treat it like art. I’m not meaning to go and design something that people will spend the rest of their lives trying to analyze and figure out. I mean you have to compare it to those pieces of art that immediately draw you in when you’re walking through the art museum that tell you what the artist was thinking at that exact moment. It needs to be that painting that sums up an entire message within a short glance, making you want to spend time to get even more out of it.
Content is your way to relate and engage with people who are online searching for the industry your business falls into. The people are visiting your site to interact and learn about who you are, and why they should start a business relationship with you. While analyzing art is a favorite past time of mine, here are three suggestions to making great art, and in this case, great content.
Personality & Self-Awareness
Start generating content by sitting down and writing phrases or ideas of what you think of when you try and describe yourself or your business. These phrases and keywords can be used as building blocks. Your site needs to show personality and a specific voice that is consistent throughout the site. If you start by writing down various descriptions, you will be able to weave in self-awareness throughout the pages. These two components make up your voice and identity that people are going to be able to find informative yet specific and unique to your own business. This can even help you beyond just content for your site, but also branding materials.
Relatibility
If your site has an obvious personality that is great, but that does not guarantee that it’s relatable. Your content needs to establish that connection with your target audience by being real and providing text that can be interactive. Generating rich content will require you to know the specific type of person that is wanting to visit your site. Once you know your target audience, make sure to use terms and keywords in a way that they will know exactly what you’re talking about, and not waste their time having to define technical words you are using. The more relatable and easy the site feels, the more time the viewer is going to be able to spend on reading your content.
A Clear Intention
While you can talk about your company, you need to also write content that holds a clear intention. This can be done through call to actions, specific tag lines, contact forms, FAQ and other pages that specifically take care of any hesitation about the site’s intention. As the writer you are the navigator for your users, and no one likes a navigator who gets you lost. Make sure your intention is clear and concise so your viewers do not miss the important points.
If you keep these three components in mind when brainstorming, you will be able to have an informative and interesting site. Just remember for it to be successful, there needs to be balance. The balance is there to keep an easily understood and concise site that your viewers will be able to learn what they need to know, and not feel that they are wasting their time trying to figure out what is important information and what is not.
When writing content, do not forget that you get to be yourself, you get to create a piece of work that showcases you and your business. For some people, your website is their first impression, make it count.
