We had the honor of collaborating with the Iowa Department of Public Safety in developing a stronger online presence where community members such as teachers, police officers, parents, and even students can get training on reporting school violence. The goal of this website was to create an environment where interested parties felt comfortable not only receiving training on reporting, but also to make an easier user experience that highlights their new feature that allows users to choose to report anonymously to the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
The Challenge
One of the biggest challenges of this project was keeping the voice and tone consistent across the website. Safe + Sound is only one product of the state’s government. It is public-facing, communicating serious, sensitive material involving public safety. We wanted to relay this through inviting yet authoritative messaging, reassuring users that Safe + Sound is here for support.
Another challenge was making sure that when we were translating their vision for the outline of the website, making sure the CTAs and the header elements were in places that made logical sense, providing the best flow for the users.
The Summary of Solutions
In collaboration with the Iowa Department of Safety, we identified that their main goal is to ensure the safety of public schools. Communication was one of the most important things to focus on, so we came up with the following solutions:
- Throughout each page you will find additional headings that focus on empathy towards the importance of safety reporting.
- Across the website, we made sure to make any phone numbers, emails or special CTAs accessible to users on every page.
- We developed user-specific content pages on the website to ensure that each user group could find exactly what they needed, and that the information available to them was easy to understand.
