I have worked at Webspec Design in Des Moines, Iowa for the past year. During my time I’ve come across many different companies, some large and small, private or corporate owned. No matter the size of the company or who owns it, they all had to start off small and unknown. Each one of these businesses had to start from the ground up. I’m confident in saying that their main goal, after developing their business idea, was to think up original company names. They needed to find a name that worked with the services they were providing but also make it catchy enough to get noticed by the general public. Although this may seem like an easy task, it can actually be quite daunting. Anyone who has started up their own business knows what I am talking about. It’s hard to come up with a name let alone one that is different and catchy at the same time. You also have to think about how this will work with branding. Will the company logo design look good? How will your website look when it has been designed around your logo concept? Will people understand the name and business? These are just a few things to think about when deciding the name that will brand your new company. With that being said, here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding on business names and how to go about getting the best names for branding companies.
Think Back To The Beginning…
First off, think back to when you first decided to start up your business. What were your goals? Who were you targeting? What services were you planning on offering? All of these questions play a vital role in coming up with a name for your company. Ideally you want branding and a logo that can answer all of these questions. You don’t want to mislead your customer into thinking that you do one thing when really you do something else entirely.
Unique Company Logos and Names are Good… Sometimes
Simply put, the easier your company name is to spell and remember the more potential traffic your website will get. When coming up with a name try not to misspell words or make up your own unique way to spell the potential name of your company. It’s sad that companies with misspelled words or who have different ways to spell the name of their company get less traffic to their websites than the ones who keep their names spelled correctly. More people tend to forget the company’s name if it has unusual spelling or they don’t remember how you spelled it so they end up finding another company to fill their need.
Company Name: Keep it Simple
Keep your company name simple. Companies with one word names are easier to remember because they are not complex. Company names made up of two words are fine as well. Anything more than that is more difficult for people to remember. It’s kind of like phone numbers. When someone gives you their number they don’t just ramble off the whole nine numeric digits in a straight shot. They give you 2 to 3 numbers at a time. The reason for this is because the brain can’t remember that many things in one shot. That’s why when people spell or give out numbers they pause to allow our brains to catch up. Just like with company names, you have to give them a name that people can glance at once and remember without having to repeat it a number of times to memorize it. For example: Allied Insurance is a better choice than calling it Allied Insurance for Homes, Boats & Auto.
What About the Company Logo?
When deciding on a name you also need to keep the logo in mind. This is important because the company logo is what people are going to see first. It’s how you are going to distinguish yourself from the other companies that are in the same line of business. It is the picture they are going to see in their minds’ when they think or hear of your company. You have to think about how this name is going to translate visually. Is there a way to make your logo design stand out? How are people going to respond to it? Remember that branding is how people are going to recognize you. Having a well named company can make for a great logo design, therefore it can make a great first impression.
